Why I joined WASABI: I grew up in Japan and I thought that spreading Japanese culture is something I could do at the university

Why I joined WASABI: Have been interested in Japanese culture since high school and I loved the atmosphere in WASABI ever since I attended the first BBQ. Its friendly, chill and extremely welcoming! The events are also awesome and have a nice variety.

I am a quarter Russian, Viet and rest Chinese. Weird and mixed heritage but if you get to know me, ill be one eccentric person haha!

Why I joined WASABI: Both of my parents are Japanese, and I’ve been exposed to Japanese culture from a young age, even in Australia. After getting accepted into USYD, I was looking for fellow Japanese people/Japan-lovers, and found this society!

My late grandfather was a renowned shokunin (craftsman) of tehineri, a type of Japanese clay sculpting.

Why I joined WASABI: I’d never really met and connected with Japanese people prior to university so I thought it would be a great opportunity to do so by joining this society.

I spent a third of 2018 in Japan! Before that, I hadn’t gone back for about 7 years!

Why I joined WASABI: I love being able to move away from talking about Japan in a classroom to connect with BOTH people who are Japanese and people who, just like me, love Japan. Events are always heaps chill and fun and as event exec I can hopefully bring even more fun events for everyone ♡

I’m really friggen chatty. To the point I overexplain things and my friends just tell me to shut up On my plane from Tokyo to Sydney alone, I started chatting up some stranger. It was like 10pm though and everyone on the plane was just like…CAN U PLEASE SHUT UP But I legit couldn’t stop talking… oops… TBH I just really friggen love WASABI and everyone in it, and I hope to work with everyone and strive to make WASABI an even greater FAMILY

Why I joined WASABI: I’ve always had an interest in Japanese culture since I was a kid. Joining WASABI meant that I had many friends who shared the same interests as me or could tell me more about Japan.

I was born in Botswana (located above South Africa) and lived there for 10 years before coming to Australia.

Why I joined WASABI: I went to a Snacks and Chill event and everyone was so friendly and inclusive.

I can incorporate the fact I went on a semester exchange to the US into every conversation, and I love Adele, Little Mix and now Sam Smith!

Why I joined WASABI: When I was younger, I ate wasabi and died. Now, wasabi is a part of me. When I was a freshmen, I stumbled upon the Wasabi club and thought I could learn wasabi-making. I was wrong – it was just a Japanese club. I lost nothing except my lunch money. But, I went to the food events and became social. That’s why I’m here.

I seem really awkward, and I am. Also I like chicken.

Why I joined WASABI: I joined Wasabi because I came along to the barbecue at O’Week my first year and the people there were so nice and friendly that I joined on the spot.
